Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua last week embarked on uniting the vote-rich Mt Kenya region.

Gachagua said he will ensure that the region which was divided between the East and the West comes together before the year ends.

To make this a reality, the immediate former Mathira MP rallied the Kenya Kwanza lawmakers from the region to vote for Azimio-backed candidate, former Kieni MP Kanini Kega, in Thursday’s election of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

Kega, who unsuccessfully defended the Kieni parliamentary seat on a Jubilee Party ticket in the August 9, General Election thanked the second in command for ensuring that the region is well represented at the Arusha-based parliament.

“I want to thank the DP Rigathi Gachagua who saw that Mt Kenya region will have a problem if we are not represented in Arusha,” Kanini Kega said.

Speaking on Wednesday, November, 23 Kega noted that by uniting Mt Kenya leaders, the second in command stamped his authority in the region as the senior most politician.

“Rigathi did well in uniting us, this is the only senior leader we have in Mt Kenya. We need to rally behind him as a region,” he added.

Earlier on, Gachagua called for the unity of Mt Kenya region despite political affiliations but at the same time criticized the Rtd. President accused him of failing to mentor upcoming leaders and left the region without a clear successor.

“The previous leader did not mentor our younger leaders and some of us who tried to raise our heads were met with harassment and intimidation. One of my roles now is to mentor young leaders, that are why you will be seeing me moving around accompanied by young politicians,” he said.
