On April 15, 2021, the Wiper party issued former Transport chief administrative secretary Wavinya Ndeti a direct ticket to contest for the Machakos gubernatorial seat.
This was after a consensus that saw Mavoko Member of Parliament Patrick Makau drop out of the race to support her.
However, on Monday, June 13, two Machakos voters lodged a complaint wanting the Independent Electoral and Independent Commission (IEBC) to revoke her clearance over claims that she is not qualified to vie for the Machakos gubernatorial seat.
In the complaint to the IEBC’s disputes resolution committee, Gideon Ngewa Kenya and Kisilu Mutisya stated that Wavinya Ndeti’s computer science degree is fake.
The constitution of Kenya 2010 requires that all gubernatorial candidates must be holders of a degree from a University recognized in Kenya.
The complaints claim that the former Kathiani MP does not have a degree from a university recognized in Kenya.
They allege that although she claims to have studied in the United Kingdom, there is no record of her ever registering in the UK under permutations of her name.
“She (Wavinya Ndeti) is not a holder of a degree recognized in Kenya. On November 6, 1992, she was purportedly awarded a Masters’s degree in Business systems analysis and design by the City University, London without having undertaken the first degree,” said the complainants.
Wavinya is among the list of gubernatorial candidates with questionable academic papers despite having been cleared by the commission to contest in the August 9, General Election.
Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Johnson Sakaja, his Kakamega and Kilifi counterparts Cleophas Malala and Aisha Jumwa are among those with questionable papers.
The trio is allied to Kenya Kwanza political formation led by UDA presidential candidate William Ruto in what appears that their degree saga is politically instigated.
